🎯 What Is Korea's VAT Tax Refund for Tourists?

South Korea offers a VAT (Value Added Tax) refund program for foreign tourists. When you shop at registered tax-free stores and spend at least ₩15,000 in a single transaction, you are entitled to claim back 6–9% of your purchase price before leaving the country.

The refund is available in cash (Korean Won, US Dollars, Japanese Yen, or Chinese Yuan) at city kiosks in shopping areas like Myeongdong, or at Incheon Airport kiosks on your departure day. This guide covers everything you need to know to claim every won you're owed.

As someone who has studied Korea's refund system in detail, I've seen many tourists leave Korea without claiming refunds they were entitled to — simply because they didn't know the process. That's exactly why I built this site: to make Korea's tax refund system simple, fast, and accessible for every tourist.

Frequently Asked Questions — Korea Tax Refund

The most important things every tourist should know before shopping in Korea.

What is a Korea tourist tax refund?

Korea charges a 10% VAT (Value Added Tax) on most goods. As a tourist, you are entitled to a refund on this tax when you purchase eligible items at registered tax-free stores and take those items out of the country. The average refund is roughly 6–9% of your purchase price after service fees are deducted. The refund is not the full 10% — processing fees charged by refund operators (Global Blue, Global Tax Free, etc.) typically reduce the net amount to around 7–9%.

Who is eligible for a tax refund in Korea?

You are eligible if you are a foreign national (non-Korean passport) visiting Korea as a tourist, have stayed in Korea for less than 6 months in the past year, are departing Korea with the purchased items within 3 months of purchase, and bought at a registered tax-free store. Korean residents and foreigners holding long-term visas (F-series, D-series, E-series) are generally NOT eligible.

What is the minimum purchase amount for a refund?

The minimum is ₩15,000 per store per transaction (lowered from ₩30,000 as of 2024 — making it easier than ever to qualify). To get an immediate city refund (cash at a kiosk in Myeongdong or shopping areas before going to the airport), your single receipt must be under ₩1,000,000. Purchases over ₩1M per receipt must be processed at the airport customs desk instead. There is no upper limit on total refunds across multiple stores during one trip.

What is the difference between a city refund and an airport refund?

City Refund (Immediate Refund): You collect cash at a kiosk or refund desk in the city — in places like Myeongdong, Hongdae, or major shopping malls — before heading to the airport. A credit card deposit is held as collateral and released after you scan your forms at the airport kiosk on departure day. This method is only available for receipts under ₩1,000,000.

Airport Refund: You claim your refund directly at Incheon or Gimpo Airport on your departure day. This is required for receipts over ₩1,000,000, or if you skipped the city kiosk. No deposit is held. Whichever method you used, you must scan your passport and forms at the airport kiosk before boarding — skipping this step results in the deposit being charged back to your card.

How much will I actually get back?

Korea's VAT rate is 10%, but refund operators charge a service fee, so your actual refund depends on purchase size: spending ₩15,000–₩75,000 returns roughly 6–7.5%; spending ₩75,001–₩300,000 returns about 7.5–8.5%; spending over ₩300,000 returns approximately 8.5–9%. For example, a ₩200,000 cosmetics haul at Olive Young typically yields around ₩15,000–₩17,000 back. Use our free Refund Calculator to get an exact estimate for your purchase amount in seconds.
